Xela (pronounced “Sheh-lah”) is a commonly used name for Quetzaltenango, the second-largest city in Guatemala. The name “Xela” comes from the indigenous K’iche’ Maya name “Xelajú”, which means “under the ten mountains”, referencing the surrounding volcanic landscape.
